Makaising (Ward no.1) village of Gandaki Gaun Palika is 10 kilo meter uphill from Kurintar, Prithvi National Highway. While the climb to the village is a challenging one, you can get a beautiful bird’s eye view of the highway connecting the capital city Kathmandu to the rest of Nepal. Despite such proximity to the major highway of Nepal, this small village of 106 households belong to the Chepang community - almost feels like it is in some very rural part of Nepal. Shree Prajawasti Primary School established in 1982 is located in ward number one of Gandaki Gaunpalika. The school currently has only five female teachers, including the principal. The primary school includes an Early Child Development (ECD) centre and classes from one to four. Hundred and three children enrolled of which only all of them belong to the Chepang community.

The children came from very poor families of the Chepang communities, and it was interesting to note that some children came to this school walking two hours one way and back. The school was already operating with basic infrastructure and less than adequate financial resources from the Nepal Government. The school stood very close to the 7.9 magnitude April 25th earthquake epicenter which was in Barpak, Gorkha district, and that caused the tragic distraction of many areas of Kathmandu 50 miles away. As a result, the little infrastructure the school stood on was brought to the ground. KFN with the support of its well-wishers all around the world helped the Chepang community to rebuild the Shree Prajawasti School through a project started in 2016 and completed within the planned 2 years in coordination with District Education Office Gorkha.

During the construction project, KFN members have lived closely to Chepang teachers, students and families, understanding their life conditions and experiencing the problems that afflict this community: families are economically challenged, the poverty and remoteness of their habitat deeply affect their low literacy rates; poor hygienic and health conditions; parents are poorly involved with children education and school projects. Although the school has been rebuilt; poorly follow of the available academic curriculum, lack of training and practice for the teachers to properly learn and improve their teaching skills, high absent rate across the kids, lack of extracurricular activities focused on development of the kid’s creativity and social skill, very poor English level of teachers, almost no knowledge of English for mostly of the kids and teachers are big problems that still need to be solved.

Seeing these all-problems Karunamaya Foundation Nepal with close coordination with its working partner and donor organization came up with this two-year project named “A Beautiful Dream” to improve the quality of education of students and teachers of Makaising, Gorkha with the strong belief this goal will have a long-term impact on the development of the community. With this project of Karunamaya Foundation Nepal, the following changes came about in the project area:

  1. Reflected impact on the students of Shree Prajawasti Primary Schools and other Primary Schools of southern part of Gandaki Gaunpalika through correct learning and improvement in daily routines of studying taught by the trained teachers.
  2. Reflected impact on the students through correct learning and usage of English language taught by the trained teachers.
  3. Reflected impact on the students of Shree Prajawasti Primary School seen in the importance of school uniforms and regular use of school uniforms while coming to schools.
  4. Reflected impact on the students at the primary schools through increase in attendance rate of both teachers and students, class coverage and improvement of education quality.

No one has ever become poor by giving
